A car-modification tracker needs to do four things: store each mod as a structured record rather than a post, keep photos attached to the part they document, total your spend automatically, and let you get the data back out. Spreadsheets do the first and last well. Social platforms do none of them.
What should a mod tracker actually do?
Judging tools is easier with the requirements written down first. These six are the ones that decide whether a record is still useful in three years:
- Structured records, not posts — each mod as fields (brand, part number, date, cost, installer), so it can be sorted, filtered, and totalled. A chronological feed can't do any of that.
- Photos attached to the part — not in a separate album where the connection lives only in your memory.
- Automatic cost totals — the number you avoid looking at is also the number a buyer asks for first.
- Per-vehicle separation — mods belong to a specific car, and most enthusiasts eventually have more than one.
- Survives the platform — you can export it, or hand it to a buyer, without the host's cooperation.
- Findable later — by you, when diagnosing, and ideally by other owners researching the same part.
Why do Instagram and forum threads fall short?
Both are genuinely good at something. Instagram gets your build seen, and the feedback loop while you're working is real. Forum threads are still where the deepest platform-specific knowledge lives — there's no substitute for a 40-page thread on your exact chassis, and no build tracker replaces that.
They fail as the system of record, which is a different job:
- Chronological, not structured — your mod list exists only as posts scattered across months. There is no list. Reconstructing one means scrolling two years of your own feed.
- Unsearchable in practice — finding the post where you mentioned the part number for your downpipe is genuinely harder than finding it in your email.
- Captions rot — details that felt obvious when you posted are meaningless a year later without the context you didn't write down.
- It disappears — forums shut down and take their threads with them, and a deleted or locked social account takes years of build history with it. This has already happened to a lot of documented builds.
- Nothing transfers — you can't hand an Instagram grid to a buyer as a service record.
The practical answer is not to stop posting. It's to stop treating posts as the record. Keep the structured log somewhere durable and post from it.
Is a spreadsheet enough?
For one car, often yes — and it's worth saying plainly rather than talking you out of it. A spreadsheet gives you total control, no account, offline access, and trivial export. It satisfies four of the six requirements above on day one.
Where it runs out: photos live somewhere else, so the visual record and the data record drift apart. Nothing links to the actual parts, so fitment questions still mean starting from scratch. And it's invisible — which is fine if you only want a personal ledger, and a real cost if you want the build to be findable or credible to a buyer.

How do you move years of history without losing it?
Migrating a build you've documented elsewhere is less painful than it sounds, because you're not moving posts — you're extracting facts:
- Pull parts and dates from order confirmations and card statements. This is faster and more accurate than working from your own posts.
- Pull labor and part numbers from shop invoices.
- Use photo timestamps to date anything the receipts miss.
- Enter the mods that are currently on the car first. Removed and superseded parts can be backfilled later, or skipped.
- Mark anything uncertain as approximate rather than guessing precisely. An honest record with a few approximate dates is more credible than a suspiciously exact one.
